So once again Frodo is out of the comparison. When it comes to Tolkien's quotes about Sam being inspired by batmen whom he thought superior to himself, I would note that while he compared Sam to batmen, he never compared Frodo to (nor based him on) himself or other officers. Sam was never compared to Frodo in those terms, and based on the text and Tolkien's own analysis of their respective characters and heroism in his letters, I don't see how one can argue that Sam was a truer hero! Tolkien's mention of Sam as "chief hero" (and not "true hero/protagonist") was said in a specific context, a comparison between Aragorn and him. (:EDIT Do you think when Sam sailed west he met Frodo again?) So my question again is how would you guy's define Frodo and Sam's relationship? What does it mean to you? And do you think Tolkien considered Sam the true Protagonist and a better hero then Frodo? I'd love to hear your thoughts down below. Either he would've died out there alone in the wilderness or the Ring would've consumed him quicker. They to me are the greatest friendship in the entire story because they are best friends, brother's in arms, and family. It really is true that Frodo couldn't have made it without Sam. While I've seen some debate if Sam was the true protagonist or if it was frodo as well as who was the true hero, to me the very peak of their bond was when Sam carried Frodo up Mt Doom. Sam was all Frodo had left of the shire and was a constant reminder of what he was fighting for. Tolkien once said in a letter that Sam match Bilbo more than Frodo as the quintessential Hobbit and I think that is the biggest reason why Frodo didn't fall to the ring sooner. He reminds Frodo that they will make it home when Frodo is ready to give in to despair and he keeps him positive. Sam becomes Frodo's rock because even though they are walking into danger and certain death Sam is the one who keeps Frodo laughing even on the stairs of cirith ungol or the emyn muil. So Sam's loyalty to Frodo makes sense because he clearly looks up to Frodo.ĭuring the journey the position changes slightly. Frodo is the Eldest and wisest of the Four hobbits and he clearly seems like the leader Sam has been close to the Baggins family since he was a kid and was taught his letters by Bilbo. Instead I view it either Elder brother younger brother or Father/son. Of course I'm not trying to start a debate about anything "romantic" between them Though I myself don't believe their bond is romantic. Everyone has an opinion on it but I find it to be deeper than just friends yet more than just Servant and master. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there! Say hello to our friends in the following places:ĭoes sam being referred to as the cheif hero mean that Tolkien considered him more of a hero then Frodo? Is this because he thought of Batman's as superior to himself during ww1?Īlso the relationship between Frodo and Sam is fascinating to me. We're looking at starting a wiki for these common ones.
